Training for the Real World: How AI is Transforming HealthCo’s Behaviour of Concern program

Responding to behaviours that challenge – aggressive, violent, inappropriate or self injurious behaviour, is a significant part of the role of being a healthcare practitioner – but that doesn’t make it easy!  Whether it’s a frustrated patient in pain or a confused individual with cognitive decline, in the acute or residential setting – healthcare professionals are tasked with de-escalating tense situations with calm, care, and clarity. In fact it’s a core responsibility of the job and staff are held accountable as such. But we all recognise the difficulty of responding ‘in the moment’, feeling the pressure to de-escalate. Whilst also keeping the show on the road and carrying out the care activity required.

At HealthCo, we’ve developed a smarter way to prepare teams for these moments – an AI-enhanced Behaviour of Concern training module that uses advanced Voice AI to simulate real-life patient interactions. It’s immersive, realistic, and built to help healthcare teams respond better, not just know better.

Why Traditional Training Isn’t Enough

For years, Behaviour of Concern training has relied on classroom theory and in-person roleplay. While these methods have their place, they often fall short of preparing staff for the complexity and unpredictability of real-life interactions. Here’s why:

  • Roleplay is often uncomfortable. Many staff feel awkward performing in front of peers, which leads to rehearsed, unnatural responses that don’t reflect how they’d behave under real pressure.
  • Scenarios become predictable. Once you’ve been through a few roleplays, you start to anticipate the script. This limits growth because trainees aren’t reacting, they’re performing.
  • Limited realism. Actors or trainers can’t always replicate the emotional intensity of a real patient who is angry, scared, or confused. And if the situation doesn’t feel real, the learning doesn’t stick.
  • No true one-on-one focus. In group settings, not everyone gets equal time or feedback. Some staff leave sessions having said only a few lines—not nearly enough to build real confidence.
  • Hard to measure improvement. Without transcripts, recordings, or measurable feedback, it’s difficult to know what worked, what didn’t, or how someone can improve for next time.

In short, traditional methods often teach the what, but not the how. They cover policies and procedures, but they don’t always give people the space or realism needed to build instinctive, calm, and effective responses in high-stress situations. That’s the gap our AI-enhanced module fills

How the AI-Enhanced Module Works

We’ve integrated Voice AI technology into our training to offer two lifelike simulation modes:

  • A disgruntled patient, expressing anger and resistance.
  • A dementia patient who is confused, lost, and anxious.

Each session runs in two phases:

  1. Group active listening practice – helping teams recognise tone, emotion, and cues.
  2. Individual AI conversation – trainees engage directly with Voice AI in a private, controlled setting.

No scripts, no actors, just human-like, dynamic interaction that pushes trainees to think and respond in the moment.

Smarter Practice, Stronger Response

Trainees get to:

  • Sharpen listening and communication skills
  • Build confidence in handling emotional or high-risk situations
  • Reflect on their performance with post-session transcripts

This is practical, hands-on learning. The kind that sticks.

Why It Matters

In healthcare, how you respond matters just as much as what you say. Our AI-enhanced training provides a safe space to get it wrong, learn from it, and get better, before it happens in real life. This isn’t just about ticking training boxes. It’s about giving staff the tools to handle difficult scenarios with professionalism and empathy and doing it in a way that feels real.
